This is a vintage Hobnail bedspread in a soft white. Please note: There is one small place with a visible mend – please read the full description and view the photos. It is otherwise in very good, gently used, vintage condition with no spots or stains found. There is some wear to the fibers and the fringe is slightly tangled in places. There are a few very small pulls on the front side.
The mended area is shown in photos 9 & 10. It is less than 2″ x 2″ and is near the pillow end. It looks like some loops got pulled and someone did some stitching to stabilize it. In the photos, I was able to place it under the pillow tuck – it is right in the area that the tuck ends.
This classic style, over the decades, has gone by several names: American Pine; American Tradition; and New England Tradition are the names I came across in my research. The style of weaving is hobnail, and it is also sometimes called by Popcorn Chenille; Terry Bedspread; or Closed Loop Chenille. It looks similar to Candlewicking, but is not candlewicking.
It is 100% Cotton and has been freshly laundered – by machine wash and dry.
It features a Pine – Star Medallion and is decorated with pine trees and flowers.
There are three fringed sides and there are rounded corners at the foot end. The fringed trim is about 3″ high including the hatched weave.
With the fringe, it measures 96″ wide and 112″ long. It is photographed on a table that is 50″ wide x 72″ long. A full sized mattress is 54″ wide x 75″ long and a queen is 60″ wide x 80″ long. This bedspread would work on either.
On a double (full) bed, you’d have a 21″ drop on the sides and the end and about 16″ for the pillow drape and tuck. On a queen you’d have 18″ drops and about 14″ play for the pillow drape and tuck.
Photos were taken on a full sized bed.
The tag says “Operator 3”.
